Hessian Fly

Back Next

Hessian fly is an insect that weakens wheat stems just above a lower node and often results in lodging. In this photo, you can see the broken stem and the elliptical, dark brown, "flax seed" stage of the insect embedded in a lesion just to the left of the break (see arrow). Hessian fly can be controlled with a combination of variety resistance, planting after the "fly-free" date, controlling volunteer, and some tillage to reduce over-summer survival in the wheat residue.
