West Nile Virus - Protecting Yourself: Insect Repellents

One of the best safeguards against West Nile Virus (WNV) is DEET (N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) repellent. Apply repellents to clothes whenever possible.

Generally repellents with about 30 percent DEET work best for adults. Children will need to use a repellent with a lower concentration. The more DEET a repellent contains, the longer it will protect. There are many repellent products on the market, but not all are as effective as those that contain DEET. Other products use plant-based oils to repel insects. Plant-based repellents are generally effective for a shorter time.

When using insecticides or repellents, be sure to read and follow all instructions on the label. Products containing DEET should not be sprayed on cats and dogs.

Some things to remember when applying repellents:

• Read and follow instructions of the label.
• Avoid over application.
• Use just enough repellent to cover exposed skin and/or clothing.
• After returning indoors, wash treated skin with soap and water.
• Do not spray directly on face, spray into hands and then apply to face.
• Do not apply over cuts, wounds, or irritated skin.
• Do not use under clothing.
• Do not spray DEET-containing products in enclosed areas.
• Do not use repellent on infants.
