Updated reports of West Nile Virus in Kansas

2007

The first human case of West Nile  in Kansas has been reported for this summer.  An adult from north central Kansas was hospitalized with a neuro-invasive case, but has since been released.  In general the numbers of infection are low so far, with 26 cases reported nationwide (see the CDC website for specific information).

October 12, 2006

Another horse, this one from Harvey County, has tested positive for WNV.  That brings the total so far this year to 4 positive equines.  The CDC website lists human cases in Kansas at 24, with 3 fatalities.  All the contiguous states have reported cases of WNV, with a total of 3135 human cases nation-wide.

October 6, 2006

The following are the latest results from the mosquito testing.  All mosquito pools tested negative.

To date, 20 counties have had positive WNV results (see KDHE website) .  These include 23 human cases (and three fatalities), according to the CDC website.

September 19, 2006

The following are the latest results from the mosquito testing.  There was one positive group of Culex tarsalis, collected in Wamego.

August 30, 2006

West Nile Virus has also been detected in a mosquito pool in Finney County, and has been confirmed in animals in several counties throughout the state, including two birds in Riley County, a squirrel in Reno County, a horse in Jewell County, a horse in Logan County and a horse in Ottawa County.

Thirty-three other states, including Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, have reported at least one human case of West Nile Virus to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as of August 29. Every state except for Alaska, Hawaii, Maine and the District of Columbia has reported West Nile Virus activity in birds, animals or mosquitoes this year.

August 29, 2006

Latest counts from KDHE show a total of 18 reported WNV Human cases, with 3 deaths.  Counties with positive reports include:  Harvey, Reno, Johnson, Gray, Finney, Kiowa, Barton, Neosho, Sedgwick, Rush, Douglas and Pratt.

August 28, 2006

A positive test has been reported from an equine located in Jewell County.

August 24, 2006

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) today announced the second West Nile Virus death of the 2006 season. In addition, six other cases of West Nile Virus have also been reported to the state. These seven latest cases are as follows:

July 20, 2006

The lab at K-State has reported positive west nile virus tests from the following:  red-tailed hawk collected in Manhattan, crow collected in Manhattan and a fox squirrel collected in Hutchinson.  There is also report of one positive test result from a horse, collected from Logan county.

July 6, 2006

The first confirmed case of WNV fever (non-neurological) has been reported in Kansas.  The individual is from Harvey County, and was not hospitalized.  No additional information is available at this time.

June 22, 2006

Mosquitoes were collected from Riley, Franklin, and Atchison counties on June 12, 13, and 14th.  The included Culex salinarius (Riley and Franklin), C. tarsalis (Riley, Franklin and Atchison), and C. restuans (Atchison county only).  All tested negative.

June 6, 2006

Mosquitoes were collected from Finney County (Culex tarsalis), Seward County (Culex tarsalis) and from Pratt County (Culex tarsalis and C. restuans).  They were submitted for testing.

May 31, 2006

The first results for mosquito testing have come in.  Collections of mosquitoes from Emporia in Lyon County (Culex tarsalis and C. restuans) and Wichita in Sedgewick County (Culex tarsalis and C. salinarius) have all tested negative.
