Resizing & Cropping Graphics:
Resizing and cropping images makes them physically smaller, allowing
them to fit in a certain area, and also making download times faster.
This is especially useful for those using a dial-up modem to connect
to the Internet, which is still the majority of users.
Cropping
Cropping an image involves drawing a box around a portion of an image,
and then removing everything outside the box. This is often done to
remove extra backgrounds from a photo.
- Open the desired graphic in IrfanView
- Hold down the left mouse button while drawing a box over the desired
portion of the image.
- Select Edit -> Crop, or press Ctrl-Y to crop the image.
- If you don't like the results, choose Edit -> Undo (or Ctrl-Z), to undo,
and try again. If the image is correct, choose Edit -> Save As to save
the image, and you're done. Be careful not to simply save, as this will
overwrite your original image, unless you're certain you won't need the
unaltered version again.
Resizing
- Open the desired graphic in IrfanView
- Choose Edit -> Resize/Resample, or press Ctrl-R. The following dialog
box will appear.

- You can resize as an absolute pixel size, or by percentages.
Usually, the "Preserve aspect ratio" box should be checked.
This allows you to avoid "squashed" images, and tedious manual
calculations of picture dimensions. Resampling filters are only used
when enlarging, and control how "boxy" or pixelated the final
image appears.
- Click OK, and then choose Edit -> Save As to save your results.
Again, you can press Ctrl-Z or choose Edit -> Undo to undo the resize.
Again, be careful not to overwrite the original image unless it is no longer
needed.
