General IrfanView Use:

Setup and file associations
Screenshots

Setup & File Type Associations

When you download and install IrfanView, it will present you with the following dialog box. To access this dialog later, choose Options -> Properties, or press P.

File type associations dialog box

These are all the files that can IrfanView can display. Usually, you should select all of these image file types. The main exception is PSD, which are Photoshop files. If you have Photoshop installed on your machine, you'd probably prefer to use it for Photoshop files. You can also choose to let IrfanView display sounds and videos, if you'd like.

If you decide later that you don't want IrfanView to display a certain file type, simply open IrfanView, and select Options...Properties (or press "P"), and uncheck the box for that file type.

Screenshots

Screenshots are useful for showing users which buttons to push in a program, or showing the output from a program, like those on this page. IrfanView provides an excellent screen capture utility.

  1. Open IrfanView, select Options...Capture, or press "C", then choose your options from the dialog box that appears

    Screen capture window

  2. The capture area box allows you to choose what you'd like to capture.

The foreground window option captures exactly what you see above, without the rest of the open windows or desktop.
The whole screen captures the entire Windows screen.
The foreground window-client area captures everything except the toolbars at the top and bottom of the screen (i.e., in the screenshot above, the blue "Capture Setup" bar would not appear).
The Hot key can be changed as desired. Time delay is useful for certain programs where a keypress will cause undesired operation of the program which is "having it's picture taken."
Use "Include mouse cursor" when the cursor is desirable to show a user exactly where to click with the mouse.

  3. Press Start and the IrfanView window will minimize. Press the Hot key (Ctrl-F11 by default) and the IrfanView window will pop up with the screenshot. Crop or resize as desired, then save it as a JPG, PNG, or GIF image to import into your web.
