Introduction:

A picture is worth a thousand words... but not a thousand kilobytes. Graphics can add to or detract from your webpages, depending on how they are used. Too many pictures, and your page loads very slowly. No pictures, and your page looks like a boring text file.

Rules of thumb for Web design, especially for OzNet sites, include:

Use graphics sparingly, unless they are the main content
Use "alternate tags" for graphics
Don't use animated GIF files. They're annoying.

We recommend Photoshop and the free program IrfanView for image editing. You can also check the links page for some other good programs. Also, for those using FrontPage 2000, a program called Microsoft Image Composer is included on CD 2. This program is fairly basic, but does allow some image editing functions without having to purchase expensive programs. This tool has been integrated into FrontPage 2002, so we won't discuss its use here. However, some tips can be found here.
