thermometer Thermometers are devices used to measure temperature.  They come in many different types and are grouped by their construction.  The most familiar are the liquid-in-glass (such as a mercury thermometer) and electrical (such as the digital thermometers).

The picture on the left shows a liquid-in-glass thermometer.  The scale on a thermometer might also vary.  In the United States, we usually see temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.  Most countries around the world use the Celsius scale and see temperatures in degrees centigrade.  Zero on the centigrade scale equals 32 on the Fahrenheit scale.
