rain gage A Rain gauge is an instrument used to measure how much rain has fallen. There are several different types that are grouped by how they operate: recording rain gauge, non recording rain gauge and rain-intensity gauge.

The picture on the left shows a standard, non-recording rain gauge.  The observer would measure how much rain has fallen, record that amount, then empty the gauge.
