Welcome
Kansas is called the Sunflower State because of the many wild or native
sunflowers that grow here. Sunflower is an excellent summer crop for
the Great Plains because they have an extensive root system and this aids
them during dry conditions. Commercial sunflower production has been
increasing the past few years. Currently, there are about 250,000 sunflower
acres in the state and more farmers are interested in learning
how to produce them. Sunflowers require some different production
practices compared to wheat, grain sorghum, and soybeans. This site was
developed so that we can identify important sunflower growth stages and
production tips and practices throughout the season. We will be watching a
field on the K-State Agronomy Farm from planting all the way through harvest
this coming fall. We hope you enjoy it.
