2004 Ramp Progress Report
Past 12 Month Summary:
Three species of Trichogramma spp (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) egg
parasitoids have been under evaluation as biological control agents for the
Indianmeal moth (Plodia interpunctella Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in warehouses and
retail stores. Host-oraging efficiency trials at three spatial scales, ranging
from Petri dishes to whole shelving units, have been completed for T. deion and
T. ostriniae and T. pretiosum. Foraging efficiency appears to be most similar
among the three species at the smallest spatial scale, however T. deion appears
to be the best forager, especially at the largest scale. Additionally shelving
type and package density have been examined as factors that might mitigate T.
deion's foraging efficiency. Preliminary results indicate that shelving type but
not packaging may impact foraging success. Several release locations for T.
deion have been explored on gondola shelving. This data will be used to develop
release guidelines for product managers/pest management professionals. Finally a
combination of packaging T. deion and the larval parasitoid Habrobracon hebetor
(Hymenoptera: Braconidae) have been examined and suggests that T. deion are
capable of protecting packaged stored products and H. hebetor capable of killing
wandering instar in both packaged and unpackaged stored products.
Year 5 Plan of Work:
Data for the three species will be analyzed and an expected 4-6 publications and
a Doctoral Dissertation will be completed by May 2004. Additional trials
exploring the possibility of combing Insect Growth Regulators (such as
Methoprene or Hydroprene), Trichogramma, and/or H. hebetor for the protection of
packaged stored products may also be conducted.
