Research Program

Since 1990, Dr. Mullen has contributed to a cooperative effort with industry to develop new technologies to improve monitoring systems and insect resistant packaging. He patented a trap, FLITe TRAK M2, for stored-product beetles in 1992. The trap has been marketed and sold by Trece, Inc. since 1994. Recently his research has involved development of monitoring systems for stored-product pests in commercial facilities. Since 1995 he has been part of a team that has used pheromone traps to develop spatial statistics to pinpoint infestations. The packaging program has received support from industry in the form of Cooperative Research and Development Agreements with several major food processing and packaging companies. The technology transferred from this research has resulted in significant reductions in insect related complaints involving packaged foods. He has 75 publication, 3 book chapters, 60 submitted and 33 invitational presentations.
