National Sweet Potato Collaborators Trial 2003

K-State has  participated in the National Sweet Potato Collaborators Group for many years now, trailing advanced sweet potato cultivars as they become available from breeding programs in  North Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina. In the last few years we have also trailed specialty types, in order to identify varieties that may provide Kansas growers with options for niche markets. One type of sweet potato of potential interest to K-State fans would be a purple-skinned and -fleshed  variety. Pathogen-tested planting materials have become available from major sweet potato programs, and these appear to off great advantages to growers. This summer we plan to: a) run a scaled down version of the national trial including use of pathogen-tested check cultivars, b) maintain and multiply seed of specialty sweet potato varieties that have performed well in trials at Haysville over the past few years, and c) initiate selection of a purple sweet potato variety from seedling nursery. For additional information contact Dr. Ted Carey.
