Kaegi Educational Display Garden
Tom Warner, Marge Kaegi, Gial Kaegi, Jason Griffin Welcome to the Phase I ribbon cutting ceremony at the
Kaegi Educational Display Garden. Before
you, lay the beginning of a long anticipated endeavor.
Although unbeknownst to most, the idea for a display garden at the
research center in Wichita has been in the works since the centers inception in
1971. The objective was always to
showcase woody shrubs and trees that have proven to be reliable landscape plants
in south-central Kansas, and has grown to include demonstration gardens
representative of the variety of crops grown at the research center.
A public garden, therefore, would serve as a teaching tool, while
increasing public awareness of the research center and its mission.
The sidewalk is the culmination of many months of discussion and planning
and represents a major step forward in the progress of the gardens.
More importantly, the sidewalk represents the commitment and dedication
of one local couple to the John C. Pair Horticultural Center, its past, and its
future. Marge and Gial Kaegi have
been instrumental in the development of the research station in other ways as
well. Gial is the original
volunteer at the center, and has given many hours of assistance and hard work.
Marge has been a dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer and has spearheaded
the effort to organize the HORTADORS, whose help is proving to be increasingly
important to the efforts at the center. The 566 feet of concrete begins at the future entrance of the Kaegi Educational Display Garden, weaves through some of the original trees on the grounds, and leads to a 3.8 acre ‘blank slate’ that will be developed into one of the most diverse ornamental plant collections in the region. On either side of the sidewalk are leaf impressions that were made from leaves collected at the center. Each section of the sidewalk is numbered in the lower left corner (as you walk east to west). Come watch the garden grow. |
