VEGETABLE PROJECTS

High Tunnel Structure

High tunnels are relatively low-cost structures that can provide growers with significant production advantages through the environmental protection that they provide (rain shelter, temperature moderation and wind protection). Very little research has been done in the central plains to develop profitable and sustainable production systems for them.
Four 32 x 20 foot high tunnels (unheated greenhouses) have been constructed at the Center, with support from a multi-state USDA research and  extension grant to explore profitable production systems in these structures. Systems being studied under this project at sites in Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas include flowers, tomatoes, green leafy vegetables and small fruit. Here, at the Haysville site, our initial trials will investigate the potential for using high tunnels for annual strawberry production (plasticulture system), with summer cropping of tomatoes and peppers.
