County Demo Plots 2006 Yields

One of the most important considerations in picking a variety is how it compares for actual performance at different locations and in different years. KSU conducts replicated tests of yield performance at approximately 18 locations around the state of Kansas. Click the Table of Contents at left to see a web version of "2007 Kansas Performance Tests With Winter Wheat Varieties", Report of Progress 967 from the Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service at Kansas State University. From there you can check yield results of individual locations or you can look at variety performance over multiple years within a region. Other characters such as maturity, test weight, straw strength, etc. are summarized for major varieties. However, this year there were a number of problems across central and eastern Kansas. Thus, performance test data from these areas will be limited. In addition to official tests, wheat variety demonstration plots are established by many county extension agricultural agents in cooperation with local farmers and agribusiness. Plots are used for observations by farmers throughout the year and as a focal point for plot tours. The plots are often harvested, but as these county plots are generally unreplicated, variety yield differences should be interpreted very cautiously. To see how wheat varieties performed in the county demonstrations near you, select the appropriate area of the state (links on left). When the data from county plots are pooled, their results tend to be more reliable. Select the Summary link to see how varieties compared to a standard check variety (Jagger) for each area. The table shows how many times a particular variety could be compared to the check and the average yield difference (plus or minus in bushels per acre) from the check variety. |
