Secondary Majors

A secondary major is a great possibility often overlooked by most students and advisors, but can be worked into the NUKIN program - if you plan ahead of time. KSU offers five secondary majors: Gerontology, American Ethnic Studies, International Studies, Latin American Studies, and Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences.

Each secondary major requires at least 24 hours, but some courses in the HN and KIN programs already count toward those requirements, so they can do "double duty". For example HN 132, HN 400, HN 510, and KIN 335 are all required for the NUKIN curriculum; and these 13 credits automatically count towards the secondary major in gerontology. Additional courses can be taken to fulfill the humanities requirements. For philosophy, PHILO 365 Medical Ethics are approved for gerontology. For Western heritage - HIST 520 Death and Dying.

One disadvantage is that some courses are offered infrequently (e.g., once every other year), so you will have to watch for them. If you are working toward a secondary major in Gerontology, you can become certified in Long-Term Care Administration. If you are interested in specific requirements for each secondary major, consult the  KSU Undergraduate catalog and see the program director for that major.

Information on Secondary Majors also appears in the online KSU Undergraduate catalog.  Here are direct links to some of the more common Secondary Majors for NUKIN students:
