| Leaf rust | |
| This is a bad case of leaf rust! It is called leaf rust because it looks just like rust that you see on metal. When you walk through this field your pants will turn orange because the spores will rub off. If this is early in kernel development, it will hurt grain yields. The flag leaf will eventually die. Some wheat varieties have good resistance to this disease while others are susceptible. | |
| This is tan spot, another foliar disease that can cause grain yield losses. You can see why it is called tan spot. There’s a yellowish area with a tan spot in the middle. | |
| This is an example of speckled leaf blotch. You can see the
black specks in the brown areas of the leaf. Sometimes this disease and
tan spot are confused, but if you see the black specks, you know it is
speckled leaf blotch.
All three of these diseases are caused by fungi and they can result in yield losses. Farmers try to plant wheat varieties that have good resistance to these diseases.
