Compare sick and healthy heads

photo 117a

What are the first things you think about when you look at the head on the left? Well, yes, it is definitely darker than the one on the right. (These are both Jagger heads.) They are both basically the same size (same number of spikelets), but there doesn’t appear to be anything in the spikelets or at least, not very much. You can see there are several kernels per spikelet on the healthy head. Let’s compare kernels of the two heads.

The two small kernels are from the diseased head and the kernel on the far right is from the healthy head. The small kernels are 5 mm long and the large, healthy kernel is 7 mm long. As these kernels mature and ripen, they will shrivel. The first kernel already appears slightly deformed.
