Last week we stored our seed in metal bins
until it was time to clean and bag it. Well, it’s time to clean our
seed. Just like a commercial elevator, our seed cleaning house has a
dump pit where a truck unloads the seed. |
 |
The conveyor brings the seed up from the pit
and it is lifted to the cleaner, which is just to the left of this
conveyor. |
 |
This is the seed cleaner. The grain is dropped
in at the top and passes over four screens to remove materials larger
and smaller than the seed. Air is blown through the seed to remove the
light weight material. Click
here to see the grain on the screens. |
 |
This is the cleaned seed coming out of the
cleaner. Now, it is lifted with a conveyor
to an overhead storage bin. |
 |
This is a bagging machine with an empty bag
ready to be filled. You can see the bottom of the overhead bin. Grain
from the bin falls into the bagging machine and it fills and seals the
bag. The filled bag is put onto a conveyor and the bag is stacked on a
pallet. What’s a pallet? Look at the next picture. |
 |
This full pallet which has about 30 bags on it,
is lifted and stacked by the forklift in the storage shed. A forklift is
a handy machine to have when you need to stack pallets of grain on top
of each other. This seed will be sold to farmers later in the summer and
early fall for fall planting. (By the way, a pallet is made of wood and
is used to stack bags on it.) |
