Freeze damaged wheat head versus healthy wheat head

photo 81a

This head was frozen during the boot stage, but it emerged anyway. Notice the spikelets are yellowish-green and water-soaked. Also, the awns are bleached yellowish-white. That’s another symptom of freeze injury. This head will not produce any grain.

This is a healthy head emerging from the boot. See how this head has a nice crisp, green color. Compare this one to the previous damaged head.
