| Freeze Damage | |
| Freeze damage can be subtle and difficult to identify. If the weather remains cool after the freeze, symptoms will be slow to appear. Conversely, with warm weather after a freeze the symptoms can be seen within several days. Damage to the internode region of the stem is a common symptom. The stem is discolored and will eventually collapse. | |
| This is an example of a collapsed stem due to a freeze. With the damaged stem nutrients cant be transported to the growing point and it eventually dies. | |
| If the growing point is dead, the plant can remain green and appear as if nothing is wrong for more than 7 to 10 days. But if you notice a chlorotic (yellowing) leaf as it is emerging from the whorl, that is an indication that the growing point is dead. | |
| When you cut the stem and you see the growing point like this one, you know it is dead. It hasnt turned brown yet, but it will. This a growing point or head within three days after a damaging freeze. It has lost its turgid, whitish-green appearance. It just doesnt look healthy. | |
| Heres an example of a healthy growing point. Notice the nice, whitish-green appearance. Compare this one to the previous growing point that had been damaged by a freeze. | |
