Position: Computer Information Specialist – Position # W0007474
Location: USDA-ARS-GMPRC, Wind Erosion Research Unit, 1515 College Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502
Responsibilities:
Work as a member of the wind erosion modeling team
whose overall responsibility is to develop a physically based wind erosion
prediction system (WEPS)
Assist to extend the use of WEPS as a management tool for additional lands, including
military training land, where input variables are often limited.
The incumbent will work independently:
55% of time developing a procedure to parameterize
when various input variables are unknown.
15% of time exploring consequences and benefits of
judgmental parameterization.
15% of time improving utility of WEPS on military
training lands.
15% of time developing variable directories, writes
FORTRAN code, inserts submodels into code and does test runs of the mode.
Qualifications
Required:
BS in Computer Science
Knowledge of software development principles and how to effectively apply them in a research
environment.
Knowledge of, and practical experience with, Java and experience with C and C++.
Practical experience with commercial application development tools.
Ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals of various technical backgrounds.
Desired:
Knowledge of and practical experience with FORTRAN 77 and FORTRAN 90/95.
