29th Annual K-State Special ‘K’ Bull and Female Sale Slated March 3

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State University’s 29th annual Special “K” Bull and Female Sale will be March 3 at 3 p.m. at the university’s purebred beef unit at 1912 Denison Ave. in Manhattan. The sale coincides with the K-State Cattlemen’s Day, scheduled for earlier in the day at Weber Hall.

The sale, which offers high-performing bulls, replacement-quality heifers and cows picked from the heart of Wildcat herds, is somewhat unique in that it is run entirely by students, said Scott Schaake, animal production specialist with K-State Research and Extension. Schaake teaches the livestock sales management class that is in charge of the sale.

“Buyers have the opportunity to acquire the best genetics K-State has to offer by selecting an embryo flush on one cow of each breed that K-State owns.

The sale will feature:

• 70 Angus, Simmental and Hereford bulls.

• 12 Angus, Simmental and Hereford yearling heifers.

• 60 registered Angus and Simmental calving cows.

• 40 commercial Angus and Black Baldy calving cows and heifers.

• 1 Angus, Simmental, and Hereford flush.

Cattle will be available for viewing the week of the sale and will be on display starting at 8 a.m. on Friday morning. Information on the stock being sold is available on the Web at www.asi.ksu.edu/bullsale. For questions, inquiries or a request for a sale catalog, interested persons can call 785-532-6127 or e-mail bullsale@ksu.edu.

Registration to cover refreshments and materials is $15 by Feb. 20 or $25 on-site. Further information and registration forms are available on the Web at http://www.asi.ksu.edu/cattlemensday.

A feature of this year’s day will be a “Symposium on Animal Identification Systems,” which will include presentations on animal identification technology and effective implementation, capturing value through traceability, the value of individual animal identification, and animal identification systems from the post-harvest perspective.

Afternoon breakout sessions will include: “Synchronization Strategies,” “BVD and other Transitional Diseases,” “Impact of Cattle Management Strategies on Retail Yield and Carcass Value,” “Agricultural and Food Biosecurity at K-State: From Texas Fever to the Biosecurity Research Institute,” “The Future of Cow-Calf Research,” “Adoption of Technology in the Beef Industry – A Historical Perspective,” and “Beef Market Update.”

Those who have attended previous Cattlemen’s Days will see a few changes this year. There will be no tent in front of Weber Hall. All Cattlemen’s Day events will be in Weber Arena or in Weber Hall. All trade show and educational exhibits will also be in Weber Arena.

To round out the day, the 29th annual K-State Special “K” Bull and Female Sale will be at 3 p.m. at the university’s purebred beef unit, north of Weber Hall at 1912 Denison Ave.
