K-State Extension Scientist Honored By National Organization

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State University Professor of Agronomy Dallas Peterson has received the Outstanding Extension Award from the Weed Science Society of America.

Peterson, who is a weed specialist with K-State Research and Extension, was honored at the organization’s annual meeting Feb. 7 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Notable among his accomplishments at K-State is a weed management Web site he developed. It provides growers and herbicide dealers access to information on weed identification, research summaries and related information.

Also in his role as an Extension scientist, Peterson develops educational programs and conducts applied research on weed management in soybeans, small grains, alfalfa and specialty crops. His programs have a strong farmer and dealer focus and include his participation in public meetings, field days and demonstrations. The programs often feature information generated from applied research on local issues, such as herbicide resistance and application technology.

Peterson is the author or co-author of numerous Extension publications, news articles, research reports and proceedings abstracts.

He has coached the K-State weeds team to several high national finishes.

Peterson earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from K-State and a Ph.D. at North Dakota State University. He worked as an assistant professor and Extension weed specialist in North Dakota from 1987 to 1989 before returning to K-State.
