Kansas Junior Swine Day Set For March 26

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas Junior Swine Producer Day is set for March 26 in Manhattan at Kansas State University’s Weber Hall Arena.

“This is going to be a fun-filled day of activities in which youth, parents, swine project leaders and anyone with an interest in swine can all increase their knowledge and abilities,” said Joel DeRouchey, animal scientist with K-State Research and Extension. “This year the program is headlined by Clark Straka of Newcastle, Okla. Mr. Straka is a former agricultural high school instructor who helped select, manage and prepare show pigs for his family and FFA chapter which won countless local, state and national competitions.”

More than $500 in show equipment will be given as door prizes throughout the day.

The fee for the event is $10 if paid by March 18, and $15 after that date. The fee covers an informational booklet, a t-shirt and a noon meal. Participants who register after March 18 cannot be guaranteed a t-shirt.

The day starts with registration from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. The program begins at 9:30 a.m. and concludes at 2 p.m.

Topics to be covered include: Understanding Your Pig’s Carcass; Basics of Judging a Swine Class; Properly Clipping Show Pigs; Daily Care and Advice for the Show; Showing to be the Best; and Stump the Swine Guys – ask any question related to your pig project.

The event, sponsored by K-State Research and Extension, is supported by the Kansas Pork Association, Suther Feeds Inc., and Showtime Show Supplies.

Registration forms are available at all Kansas county Extension offices. For more information, interested persons can contact DeRouchey at 785-532-2280 or email jderouch@ksu.edu .
