Barbara Johnson and Michael Stewart began their duties March 1, 2004, according to engineering extension department head, Richard Nelson. Johnson, who holds a bachelor of science degree in geological engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla, and Stewart, who holds a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from K-State, will work in the area of pollution prevention, Nelson said. They will direct their efforts at minimizing waste generation and helping small businesses and Kansas citizens achieve regulatory environmental compliance involving air, water and hazardous waste. Johnson has most recently been an outreach professional with the Midwest Hazardous Substance Research Center at Kansas State, and is also an environmental consultant with Wilson & Company, Engineers and Architects, Salina. She is a licensed professional engineer in Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Oklahoma, and also a registered geologist in Kansas and Missouri. Stewart has been an engineering associate in the bureau of air and radiation at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment in Topeka since 1994. “We are pleased to have two individuals with this caliber of background experience and education become a part of Engineering Extension Programs,” Nelson said. “Both Barbara and Michael have much to offer Kansans in the area of pollution prevention and regulatory compliance.” -30- K-State Research and Extension is a short name for the Kansas State University Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service, a program designed to generate and distribute useful knowledge for the well-being of Kansans.
