Workshops Can Help Professionals Target Financial Management Strategies

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Money matters. Disagreements about it are one of the leading causes of marital problems and divorce, yet professionals who counsel couples about their relationship often do not feel adequately prepared to counsel them on financial management, said Esther Maddux, K-State Research and Extension financial management specialist.

To help them, Maddux is planning “Financial Tools for Helping Professionals,” a one-day workshop that will address financial considerations for families in conflict and crisis; and financial tools and strategies to help guide clients in problem-solving and decision making that will help them resolve conflict and build a sound financial future.

The workshops are recommended for marriage and family therapists; mediators; mental health counselors and clergy, she said. They will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at four sites in the state:

  • Aug. 20: Johnson County Extension Office, 13480 S Arapaho Drive, Olathe.         Contact is Karen Elliott at 913-764-6300.
  • Aug. 27: Ellis County Extension Office, 601 Main Street, Suite A, Hays.                 Contact is Carla Morrical-Frederking at 785-628-9430.
  • Sept. 24: Finney County Extension Office, 501 S. 9th St., Garden City.                   Contact is Linda Walter at 620-272-3670.
  • Oct. 1: Sedgwick County Extension Office, 7001 W. 21st St N, Wichita.               Contact is Marilyn Toellner at 316-722-7721.

The cost to attend the seminar, which includes a workbook, lunch and refreshments, is $40 (if received before Aug. 1) and $50 after. Space is limited and early registration is advisable. For registration or more information, contact the preferred attendance Extension site or Esther Maddux at 785-532-1940 or emaddux@ksu.edu .
