Cattle ‘Kickoff Show’ Feb. 14-15 in Topeka

MANHATTAN, Kan. – More than $3,000 in savings bonds will be up for grabs during the Block and Bridle Kickoff Show Feb. 14-15 in Topeka.

The show, in its second year, is organized by Kansas State University’s chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho. It is open to 4-H and FFA and junior breed association members, said Ashley Breiner, the event’s co-chair.

The cost to register through Feb. 14 is $40 per head.

“It’s a real good time and one of the first shows of the spring,” Breiner said. Last year’s inaugural kickoff show drew more than 200 entries, she added, including entries from Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Missouri and Nebraska.

“For a first year show, we were real happy with that turnout and this year we’re hoping for more,” Breiner said.

Check-in for the event begins at 4 p.m. on Feb. 14 at the Topeka ExpoCentre. Lodging and other information is available online at www.ksu.edu/kickoff. Entrants in showmanship will compete at 6:30 p.m. that day.

On Feb. 15, the steer show begins at 8 a.m., followed by the heifer show at 9 a.m.

Awards include a $1,000 savings bond to grand champions in both the steer and heifer shows; and $500 to reserve champions. In all, prizes will be awarded to the top 5 entrants in both divisions.

In showmanship, savings bonds will be awarded in three divisions. Cash and additional prizes are available to top entrants in each cattle breed.

For more information, interested persons may call Twig Marston at 785-532-5428; Tim McClelland at 785-539-6218; or send email to kickoff@ksu.edu.
