K-State Cattlemen’s Day is March 7

MANHATTAN, Kan. – One Kansas producer’s ‘Vision for Success’ in cattle and beef marketing, and tips for capitalizing on opportunities in the retail beef trade will be featured during the 90th annual Cattlemen’s Day March 7 at Kansas State University.

Organizers have moved this year’s event to a new location in Weber Arena, off the corner of Mid-Campus Drive and Claflin Avenue on the north end of campus. Parking will be north of Weber Hall, and signs will be posted on campus to help direct attendees to the new location.

Events begin at 8 a.m. with registration, a trade show and educational exhibits. Invited speakers and others will present new information and research from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There is no cost to attend Cattlemen’s Day, which includes a free lunch.

Included on the program, Kansas cattle breeder Galen Fink, who owns Fink Beef Genetics in Manhattan, will share tips for survival in today’s beef business, including insight on opportunities for growth and sustainability in cattle and beef marketing.

Also, Molly Kaye McAdams, the business development manager of cooked meats for H.E. Butt Grocery Company in San Antonio, Tex., will discuss strategies for meeting the need of a dynamic retail beef trade. Her talk will emphasize the importance of beef safety, quality, consistency and convenience.

K-State Research and Extension specialists will give updates on new beef research at the university. Additional focus sessions include:

* update on synchronization of estrus;

* feeding flax to improve immunity, growth, carcass and meat composition;

* calf management strategies from birth to weaning;

* technology update;

* genetic improvement of marbling and tenderness in cattle.

Also, demonstrations will be held in the afternoon at the nearby K-State Beef Cattle Research Center, and the annual Special ‘K’ Bull and Heifer Sale is set for 5:30 p.m.

The annual Stockmen’s Dinner, which costs $25, will be held the night before (on March 6) at the new K-State Alumni Center, 17th Street and Anderson Avenue in Manhattan, beginning at 6 p.m. Reservations for that event are due by Feb. 27 by calling 1-800-432-1578, or 532-7584 in Manhattan.

During this year’s dinner, the family of Steve and Pauline Irsik, Sr. of Ingalls, Kan. will receive the Stockmen of the Year award, given annually to recognize innovation and leadership in the livestock industry.
