K-State Professor Receives Award

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kassim Al-Khatib received the Distinguished Service Award for Research at the recent annual meeting of the North Central Weed Science Society in Milwaukee, Wis.

Al-Khatib is an associate weed science professor in the Department of Agronomy at Kansas State University.

The award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to weed science research during the past five years, said Dallas Peterson, K-State Research and Extension weed specialist.

"The award is presented to someone in a leadership capacity who has made significant contributions and impacts in research,"said Phillip Stahlman, research weed scientist stationed at the Agriculture Research Station-Hays.

Al-Khatib’s multi-faceted research program focuses on various aspects of herbicide-plant interactions, including herbicide resistant weeds, herbicide drift and the ecological impacts on cropping systems.

Notable research accomplishments by Al-Khatib include the first confirmations of herbicide resistance in common sunflower and waterhemp. He also works to track the effects of herbicide drift on non-target crops.

These efforts have been beneficial to Kansas farmers, said Peterson. Al-Khatib authored more than 20 refereed journal publications and 50 proceedings or abstracts within the past five years.

"This is great reflection upon the strength of the weed science program at K-State," Stahlman said. "We’ve experienced steady growth over the past 10 years and hope to continue."
