Released: March 13, 2002 K-State Students Win Awards from Weed Society MANHATTAN, Kan. – Five graduate students representing Kansas State University received awards for research posters or paper presentations at the annual meeting of the North Central Weed Science Society in Milwaukee, Wis. K-State students receiving awards included Doug Shoup from Lyndon, Kan.; Kathrin Shirmacher from Quebec, Canada; Mark Lubbers from Plevna, Kan.; David Brown from Pomona, Kan.; and Konanani Liphadzi, from South Africa. Students from across the north central region of the United States and the central provinces of Canada participated in the contest, said Phillip Stahlman, K-State Research and Extension weed scientist stationed at the Agriculture Research Station-Hays. "This is a contest that showcases students and the research they conduct leading to advanced degrees," Stahlman said. "The contest has a set of criteria including clarity and significance of research, and how well they communicated with the audience." Dallas Peterson, Extension weed specialist, said members of the society judged the entries on scientific merits of the research and the quality of their presentations. "It was a compliment to the weed science program at K-State to have such a high number of award winners," Peterson said. K-State students received one-third of the possible graduate student awards out of 77 total entries. "This is the best we’ve ever done," Stahlman said. "We have climbed the ladder to make significant success within a few years. This success can be attributed to the quality of the weed science team in attracting motivated students." -30- K-State Research and Extension is a short name for the Kansas State University Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service, a program designed to generate and distribute useful knowledge for the well-being of Kansans.
