Cattlemen’s Seedstock Conference Slated Feb. 4 in Phillipsburg

PHILLIPSBURG, Kan. – The annual Cattlemen’s Seedstock Showcase and Conference will be held Feb. 4 at the Phillips County Fairgrounds in Phillipsburg.

The conference and trade show features breeding stock displays from progressive seedstock producers through the region, said Bob Broweleit, a K-State Research and Extension agriculture agent in Phillips County. This is the second year for the conference.

"This is an excellent opportunity to make contact with progressive seedstock producers and see what they have to offer [a farmer’s] operation," Broweleit said.

The conference is free, and lunch is provided. Pre-registration is not required, but interested persons are asked to RSVP to help organizers develop a meal count.

Among the conference’s featured speakers:

* Harlan Hughes, a livestock economist now retired from North Dakota State University, will discuss heifer retention strategies for the current cattle cycle;

* Ronnie Green, the assistant vice president for genetic improvement at Future Beef Operations, will talk about vertical coordination in the beef industry;

* Dale Blasi, a livestock specialist with K-State Research and Extension, will conduct a chute side electronic identification demonstration.

For more information, or to RSVP for lunch, interested persons may call the Phillips County Extension office at 785-543-6845.
