Hays Weed Scientist Receives Award

HAYS, Kan. – More than 25 years of research has earned a Kansas State University researcher the 2001 award for Outstanding Weed Scientist in the public sector.

Phillip Stahlman, the weed scientist at the K-State Agricultural Research Center-Hays, was presented the award by the Western Society of Weed Science (WSWS).

Each year the WSWS names an outstanding scientist in the public and private sector. The awards are based on recognition of significant contributions to the discipline of weed science, service and leadership in professional weed science societies.

Stahlman was nominated by a co-worker, and other weed science colleagues wrote letters of recognition.

"I’m humbled and honored that my colleagues deem me worthy of such a prestigious award," he said.

He has been active in several multi-state research projects. All of the projects have led to a strong network of scientists working toward a common goal, Stahlman said.

Stahlman’s research ranges from field bindweed control to risk assessment of herbicide-resistant wheat. He describes his research as "basic and applied research with the goal of developing and improving safe and efficient weed management" for Great Plains dryland cropping systems.
