BRIEF DESCRIPTION (include major objectives)

The purpose of this curriculum is to assist the child care provider in the understanding the benefits of breastfeeding, to enable her to help the new mother and infant in the transition to child care, and to provide her with information on the safe collection and handling of breast milk.

Objectives:  Following this session, the participant will be able to:

 

1.        State five reasons why breastfeeding is best for the baby, mother, and the child care provider.

2.        Describe how the child care setting acts to coordinate the various roles involved in supporting the breastfeeding infant and working mother.

3.        List at least five steps in transitioning an infant from his/her home into the child care setting.

4.        Describe why preattendance visits and a feeding plan are important to successful care of breastfed infants.

5.        List two needs of the breastfed infant in the child care setting.

6.        Describe how to safely collect, handle, and store breast milk.
