A departmental seminar meets each Tuesday at 4:00 pm during the Fall and Spring semesters. Faculty and graduate students are expected to attend and participate. Two credit hours of HORT 951, Horticulture Graduate Seminar, are required for completion of the M.S. degree. Three additional credits are required for completion of the Ph.D. degree. Seminars presented during the defense of a thesis or dissertations do not count towards fulfilling the seminar requirements for graduate degrees. Students may enroll in HORT 951 for more than 1 credit hour per semester.
HORT
951 is offered both Fall and Spring semesters.
Enrollment for one credit hour involves
1)
Attending
the weekly departmental seminar
2)
Delivering
an oral or poster presentation in the departmental seminar series.
3)
Evaluating
the presentations of other students.
Students
enrolling in HORT 951 for the first time are required to attend a lecture series
(offered only in the Fall semester) on the preparation and presentation of
seminars and posters. This
requirement is waived for Ph.D. students who attended the lecture series in
completing requirements for the M.S. degree.
Credit
for oral and poster presentations at local, regional, or national meetings will
be assigned only if the presentation is given in the departmental seminar
series.
One
credit must be obtained for a 15-20 minute oral presentation outlining the
student’s proposed research. This seminar should be presented early in the
student’s graduate program. The
second credit must be obtained with one of the following options:
1)
15-20
minute oral presentation summarizing the student’s research
2)
Poster
presentation summarizing the student’s research
3)
Assist
with teaching a laboratory course
4)
Teaching

student’s dissertation research, presented near the terminus of the
student’s Ph.D. degree program. The
second and third credits must be obtained with one of the following options:
1)
15-20
minute oral presentation outlining student’s proposed research, presented
early in doctoral program
2)
15-20
minute oral presentation related to student’s research
3)
Poster

4)

5)
Teaching
seminar
Credit
can be obtained for assisting with the instruction of a laboratory course only
if lecture preparation and presentation is included in the student’s teaching
responsibilities. Students electing to obtain HORT 951 credit in this manner do
not need to fulfill the attendance and evaluation requirements required for all
other presentation options.
All
graduate students scheduled to give an oral or poster presentation at the annual
ASHS meetings are encouraged to give their presentations in the departmental
seminar series prior to attending the meeting.
This applies to all students whether they are enrolled in HORT 951 or
not.
Additional
questions regarding seminar requirements may be directed to Dr. Dale Bremer, the
instructor for HORT 591.
