Research Profile
My research interests revolve around using trees to solve environmental problems. Much of this work involves interdisciplinary investigations to document the effect riparian buffer vegetation has on water quality, specifically removing nitrogen and phosphorous from surface runoff and subsurface flow. These studies are done in collaboration with colleagues in the Biological and Agricultural Engineering and Agronomy departments.
Additional studies are being conducted that seek to improve the performance of planted tree seedlings in the challenging Kansas climate. Using various techniques of weed control, tree shelters and dessication protection, the survival and growth of seedlings planted in windbreaks and riparian buffers are enhanced.
