  • Economic Entomology Laboratory, University of Minnesota. Prepare and give frequent guest lectures in basic entomology, toxicology, agronomy, and pest management courses for undergraduates and graduates at the University of Minnesota (1986 to 1999); lectured at Kansas State University (1988 to 1989).

  • Teach GRSC 651 (4 credits) and GRSC 710 (2 credits) courses in the Department of Grain Science and Industry. Teach ENTOM 805 (3 cr) course in the Department of Entomology. Give presentations at International Grains Program and American Feed Industry Association short courses.

 
 

Extension/ Outreach experience

  • Coordinate Pesticide Impact Assessment Program activities within the state, providing information on pesticide safety and registration/reregistration status to public, county agents, extension agents, and industry representatives, 1990-1999.
  • Evaluate impact of existing and new pesticide regulations in crop production.
  • Collect data on pesticides used on various crops.
  • Participate and present talks at pest control operator, stored grain, and food processing pest management conferences.
  • Publish extension bulletins, folders and fact sheets on various topics (see addendum).
  • Pest problem diagnosis and remediation.

 
 

Industry Experience

  • Visit food-processing facilities to survey premises and/or transportation vehicles for insect infestation and explore options for insect management; present talks on insect biology, ecology, and control.
  • Assist pest control companies in identifying insect species; recommend management strategies.
  • Conduct research on stored-food pests and pesticides or pesticide alternatives upon request.
  • Assist businesses involved in the food industry by investigating consumer complaints.
  • Serve as an “expert witness” in law suits, especially those pertaining to contamination of foodstuffs with insects or insecticides.
  • Consulted with over 20 grain and food companies on issues related to insect infestations. Presently consulting with Anheuser Busch to develop a pesticide management program for their rice mills and breweries.

 
 

Supervisory Skills

Managed and supervised postdoctoral research associates technicians, research specialists and junior scientists in various laboratory and field experiments at the University of Minnesota and Kansas State University (6 postdoctoral fellows, and over 20 technicians).
