Sunflower is another broadleaf crop (dicotyledon) that
is becoming quite popular in western Kansas.
There were only 290,000 acres of sunflowers planted this year.
Originally, the sunflower was a weed in Kansas, but through
breeding it was developed into a commercially produced crop. |

The seed is contained inside the seed coat.
The seed coat is the black shiny layer. Sunflower is an oilseed crop, which means when the seed is crushed it
produces large quantities of oil.
