| Canola |
 |
This new crop to Kansas is called canola. Not very many Kansas farmers are
growing canola, but maybe in the future it will be grown. Canola is a
broadleaf (dicotyledon) crop and it belongs to the mustard family. It is planted
in the fall just before wheat is planted and it is harvested in the early
summer. When it flowers it has pretty yellow flowers. |
 |
Canola is an oilseed crop, which means when the seed is crushed it
produces large quantities of oil. This oil is used primarily for cooking
oil. |
| Foxtail
Millet |

This is a grassy plant (monocot) and the heads look like a fox's
tail. It grows to about 2
feet tall and it is grown in western Kansas.
The seed is pictured on the right. |
| What do you suppose foxtail millet is used for?
It is primarily used for bird seed. |
 |
| Oats |
 |
This is a grassy plant (monocotyledon). It grows to about
2
feet tall. Oats can be used to feed livestock, especially
horses. Also, oats can be used for human consumption.
The seed is pictured on the right. |
 |
| With
the days getting cold, some people like a hot bowl of oatmeal for
breakfast. Oats can be found in a number of food products we eat. |
