Spring-Autumn Internships 2002
Applewood is an award winning estate of nearly twenty acres located adjacent to the Cultural Center of Flint. Applewood, which dates back to 1916, includes a formal perennial garden, a large rose/annual garden, extensive shrub borders, mature specimen trees, lilac, daylily and hosta collections, highly maintained turf, an antique apple orchard, a demonstration garden and exhibition and production greenhouses. The estate has been described as one of the top five gardens in Michigan. Plant identification, mapping and labeling, as well as creation of a herbarium are now taking place. an extensive Community Enrichment Calendar provides a variety of opportunities for the public to experience Applewood's gardens. In addition, elementary school level nature-based programs are offered at the estate and in the classroom.
Summer interns will work under the direct supervision of the professional horticulture staff. There is opportunity for involvement in various aspects of horticulture. The summer should bring significant professional growth through work in diverse areas of horticultural practice including: culture and maintenance of annuals and perennials, turf management, maintenance of woody plants, landscape modification, orchard management, plant propagation, greenhouse production and floral display and design. Individuals will be placed in areas that will enhance their professional goals. This internship provides an excellent opportunity to experience several horticultural areas. Interns will also assist with programs and tours for the public. Every effort will be made to give interns a well-rounded experience. Field trips and workshops are included.

Introduction
The Berkshire Botanical Garden is a not-for-profit public garden established in 1934. Located on 15 rural acres, the Garden consists of several perennial borders and herb gardens, a mixed border garden, a rose garden, a shade and pond garden, a rock garden, an ornamental vegetable garden, a four-season garden, a woodland preserve, many specialty collections and three greenhouses. the Garden is situated in the beautiful Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts, two miles from the center of historic stockbridge. The area is home to many cultural institutions and numerous natural sites.
Description
The college internship program is designed to offer hands-on experience at a botanical garden for persons aspiring to a career in horticulture, public gardening and landscape architecture or design. Intern work with horticulture staff and volunteers in all phases of public garden maintenance and development. This includes planting, weeding, watering, mulching, pruning, and interacting with visitors. Students may also become involved in special projects such as accession records, garden inventories, plant signage, or flower arranging. Intern training sessions, public educational programs, and staff field trips are offered to help broaden the students' horticultural horizon. summer internships are 12 weeks long, usually starting at the end of May, and range from 24-40 hours per week. Horticulture Internship at the Butterfly House
The Butterfly House, a division of the Missouri Botanical Garden, is looking for interns in their Horticulture Department. The internship involves maintaining the tropical conservatory garden, native habitats, prairie garden, annual garden and grounds. Duties include, but are not limited to, planting, pruning, watering, pest management, weeding, and propagation. Interns may be required to spend time in the classroom for hands on demonstrations. Interns will have direct interaction with the public.
Requirements include coursework in botany, horticulture, or related biological field, as well as working towards or having recently completed a degree in a biological field with at least a 2.5 GPA. Interns are required to work a minimum of one four (4) hour shift per week and not to exceed (16) hours per week unless otherwise authorized by the area supervisor. The Butterfly House can be flexible concerning the number of hours and design of your internship, based on prior written proposals with agreement from the area supervisor. Interns are also required to complete a project that will be presented to the Butterfly House staff.

Butterfly Garden Volunteers Needed:
Looking for hands-on experience, additions to your resume? Do you have a coupld extra hours in the week? Are you interested in butterfly gardening and conservation and the use of native plants? The Discovery Center, in Kansas City, MO, an educational facility of the Missouri Department of Conservation, is working on a large butterfly garden on their 8 acre native plant landscape.
We are looking for volunteers to assist with planting, improving, and maintaining the new butterfly garden. Projects for this spring and summer include planting an annual flower bed, improving and expanding native plant installation, and constructing a small rock wall.

The Missouri Botanical Garden was created by Henry Shaw, a prominent St Louis businessman who opened his garden to the public in 1859. Mr. Shaw intended his garden to be a center for education, scientific research, and horticulture display.
Today, the Missouri Botanical Garden is a National Historic Landmark. The mission of the Garden is "to discover and share knowledge about plants and their environments, in order to preserve and enrich life."
Internships:
The Missouri Botanical Garden Horticulture Internship is twelve consecutive weeks from mid-May to mid-August. Interns work 40 hours a week at between $6.00 and $6.50 an hour.

Full-year internship program for qualified undergraduates and graduates in horticulture, arboriculture, education, and plant sciences.
All interns receive professional training in their chosen field. They participate in the day-to-day operations of the Arboretum, attend regularly scheduled seminars and practical sessions, and enroll in courses for credit at the University of Pennsylvania and other local universities for a nominal fee. Each intern also completes an individual project, earning graduate credits at the University of Pennsylvania.

Olbrich is a 36-acre public display garden with an annual attendance of over 225,000 visitors. Interns work directly with the Gardens' horticulture staff to gain practical work experience in all aspects of botanical garden maintenance. The interns work in all of the outdoor specialty gardens including the Herb, Hosta, Meadow, Perennial, Rock, Rose, Shade, sunken, Thai and Wildflower gardens. Interns work extensively with annual beds and container plantings, aquatics, perennials, and woody plantings. They will be trained to use all mechanical equipment used in the day-to-day operations of the gardens, including mowers, tillers, edgers, cushmans, tractors and forklift. Three paid all-day field trips to other botanical gardens or horticultural enterprises is included. Interns also gain experience in maintaining proper plant records and labeling with BG-BASE database and giving public tours of the gardens. Applicants must be majoring in, or graduated from, a horticulture or plant science-related scholastic program. Summer internships
The Sarah P. Duke Gardens at Duke University announces its summer internship program for students interested in getting a "hands-on" experience in a public botanic garden. Our program will provide an in-depth introduction to various aspects of horticulture. Interns will work in all areas of the Gardens, which includes: the Blomquist Garden of Native Plants, the Culberson Asiatic Arboretum, and the Historical Terraces. Interns will also rotate through the education program; learn propagation techniques; and learn to work in the themed gardens such as the rose garden and the perennial border.
Interns will gain insight to garden design through visits to local gardens and nurseries. We will also go on a three-day trip to visit major botanic gardens and nurseries here on the Atlantic Coast. We will try to provide a broad experience to the different aspects of the "green industry" from the growing of plants to the design and implementation of gardens. Interns will also be involved with doing an independent research project with the possibility of it being implemented in the garden.

The internship program at the Scott Arboretum, developed in 1973, provides individuals with the unique opportunity of working independently under the supervision of the Arboretum's staff. Sharing in the Arboretum's managerial endeavors, interns gain valuable first-hand experience in the daily operation of an arboretum.
Education opportunities are virtually unlimited. The Arboretum's extensive collections are easily interpreted and a horticultural library is located at the office. A well-traveled staff gives the intern the opportunity to learn from national and international gardening experiences. Interns are invited to join all of the educational programs offered by the Arboretum and are encouraged to attend programs at other local institutions. Working with a congenial staff allows interns to develop relationships with well-known horticulture figures.
Over 40 individuals have participated in the Arboretum's internship program. During their tenures, interns have the chance to develop projects of their own special interest that fit with the mission of the Arboretum. Growth both professionally and socially in the field of horticulture is a top priority of internships at the Arboretum.

GARDEN INTERNS
Four seasonal intern positions at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA, headquarters of the Worcester County Horticultural Society, will be available in 2002. Interns will assist in the maintenance of perennial, vegetable, and woody ornamental gardens; greenhouse; systematic garden; orchard; and field and woodland trails. Interns will gain experience in a variety of landscape/garden maintenance tasks including, but not limited to, weed identification and removal, watering, planting, mowing, pruning, trail maintenance, and general garden and grounds maintenance.
These positions will run from April through September of 2001. Hours are 7:30am to 4:00pm, Sunday through Thursday or Tuesday through Saturday. Interns are paid $7.00 per hour and are responsible for finding their own housing and transportation. Preference will be given to students who have completed course work in horticulture, landscape design, botany, or related fields. Experience with grounds maintenance equipment, including mowers, trimmers, rototillers, trucks and tractor, is helpful.

The U.S. National Arboretum offers a limited number of internships to qualified individuals seeking on-the-job work experience and training in horticulture, botany, research, education, facilities management, and administration. Applicants need to have completed course work or practical experience in horticulture or related field. Basic gardening or laboratory skills, an interest in plants, and the ability to work independently are very important. Additional qualifications may be noted in specific descriptions. Interns participate in regularly scheduled field trips, work on independent projects related to the Arboretum, and work with the Arboretum's professional staff. Compensation for the internship is $8.47/hr. Internships over ninety days earn annual leave.
