Be involved on the cutting edge
of the newest type of garden being developed at botanical
gardens! Located in the fine arts section of Cleveland,
the Hershey Children's Garden internship offers a wide range of
experiences. Interns will interact with visitors, teach
children about gardening, do educational activities, help run
special community programs, conduct tours, work with volunteers,
and more. Interns also will install and maintain
horticultural displays. Other educational opportunities
are available through field trips and classes. Must
exercise creativity and enthusiasm. Housing is not
provided, however, some financial assistance is available to
those qualified.
Internship: Education
Assist with all school, youth,
and family programs at Cleveland Botanical Garden's main
headquarters and at its Learning Garden and school garden
locations off site. Intern will gain experience in
programs as well as community programs, garden tours, volunteer
programs, and special events. Intern may also assist with
some adult educational programs. We are looking for
energetic, enthusiastic inters with a love of gardening and
working with youth. Prefer interns that are enrolled in a
horticultural program but will consider other students and
nontraditional interns.

Assist with maintenance of
gardens and grounds including watering, pruning, planting,
weeding, mulching, fertilizing and pest control. Potential
experiences include labeling plants, mapping and plant records,
assisting with flower shows and plant sales, answering
horticultural inquiries from the public, conducting group tours,
working within other CBG departments, working off-site with
other horticultural institutions. Hours: Monday through
Friday 7:00am - 3:00pm forty hours per week. Occasional
evening or weekend work possible. Intern is responsible
for obtaining housing and transportation. CBG has

Center. The education intern will assist with adult and
children's classes, a children's summer vegetable garden

Assist in developing a class or
set of classes to be offered on site, participate in summer day
camp and help develop educational opportunities for school
groups and individuals. The participant will also write an
educational article for our member newsletter and participate in
the production of education bulletin. Other
responsibilities will include teaching classes and working in
the education garden.
Internship:
Environmental Engineering Technician
Learn and assist in pick-up,
assembly, or installation and regular maintenance of all parts
and equipment from electrical, mechanical, plumbing, light
construction, and water features to gas and electric
lighting. The intern will also perform daily, monthly, and
seasonal checks on all equipment. They will use practical
knowledge of science, math, engineering, electrical and
electronics to trouble shoot problems. Knowledge of
horticulture or plant science a plus when dealing with systems
that control the biological conditions of our Conservatory.
Internship:
Horticulture Maintenance
Train in all aspects of landscape
maintenance in the botanical garden setting, including, but not
limited to: herbaceous and woody plant installation, pruning,
watering, mulching, mowing, pest control, and equipment
maintenance.
Internship: Horticulture Production Technician
Assist the production facility
manager in producing and maintaining plants for all areas of the
Conservatory and Botanical Garden. A horticulture or plant
related background is a necessity and an interest in production
and greenhouse maintenance a must. International students
accepted.
Internship:
Interior Horticulture Maintenance
Train in all aspects of
maintenance of interior collections, including, but not limited
to: installation and removal of plants in each of our biomes;
environmental needs of plants in the Himalayan mountain,
tropical rainforest, desert, Pacific Island water garden and
palm house rooms; show design and change over, pruning;
watering, and equipment maintenance.

Plant Records
Assist our horticulture curator
in creating and maintaining the plant inventory for both the
Conservatory and Botanical Garden. Participant will also
work with BG-Base and label production.
Internship: Special Exhibits
Acquire hands-on experience in
museum exhibit design, installation and maintenance while being
a member of the permanent exhibit team. Participants will
develop and expand personal knowledge of abilities, goals and
career interests. They will gain experience in decision
making and problem solving in a team setting as well as learning
museum procedures and customer relation skills. Each
intern will develop a small exhibit to the model stage and
present it to the Conservatory's exhibit team.

Holden Arboretum

The Holden Arboretum is a public
horticulture museum established to promote the knowledge and
appreciation of plants. We care for 3,400 acres -
integrating cultivated gardens and plant collections with
surrounding native plant communities. Our internships give
students an opportunity to experience various job
responsibilities in a professional environment. On-the-job
instruction, demonstrations, and several field trips to
horticultural institutions in Ohio and Canada, offer a perfect
complement to academic study. Most classes through our
quarterly schedule are available free to interns. The
Holden Arboretum annually hosts the Ohio Gardens Intern
Conference. Located just 30 minutes east of Cleveland -
museums, professional sports, ethnic areas, and festivals are
within reasonable driving distance.

Practical work experience in
maintaining conservation collections within the Myrtle S. Holden
Wildflower Garden and stewardship of Holden's vast natural
areas. Additional work is done in the cooperative program
between Holden and the Center for Plant Conservation.
Students should have a strong interest in native plants and

Acquire practical work experience
by assisting with programs centered on public horticulture and
natural history. Opportunities exist to gain experience
with exhibit development, school programming, teaching, writing,
and developing educational materials (based on intern's interest
and Arboretum's annual needs). Interested applicants

Internship: Horticulture
Learn the horticulture operation
of the country's largest arboretum. Receive hands-on
experience in landscape maintenance, plant records, estate
gardens management, trail maintenance, and nursery
production. Training in public horticulture is achieved by
rotating through our main display garden, Rhododendron Garden,
Lantern Court estate gardens, 250 acres of plant collections,
trails, and production nursery. Assisting plant recorder
with locating, taking inventory, evaluating collections, and
data management on BG-Base provides additional training.

Horticulture Maintenance & Production
Acquire hands-on training in
landscape maintenance, tree care, and nursery production.
Rotating assignments in Holden's display garden, Rhododendron
garden, outlying plant collections, Lantern Court estate,
trails, and nursery provides a wide range of experience.
Typical maintenance activities also include weeding, mulching,
and deadheading.
Internship:
Horticultural Therapy
This position exposes an intern
to all aspects of coordinating and implementing a horticulture
therapy program. Experiences will include curriculum
development for human services agencies, greenhouse and garden
maintenance, and other special projects according to each
student's interest. Special populations served:
rehabilitation patients, the elderly, and individuals with brain
injuries, mental retardation, developmental disabilities, and
visual impairments. Some housing available.

Internship:
Landscape Gardening
Experience diverse gardening
practices at our beautiful Lantern Court estate. Student
training will include the care of annuals and perennials in
formal and informal settings; growing and propagating native
plants; rose care; planting; mulching; weeding; and various
small landscape projects. Emphasis is on hand work rather
than the use of mechanical equipment. Some housing

The Garden offers tremendous resources to people interested in
the horticulture profession. There are over seven
different functional gardens along with extensive bulb and

wide variety of tropical and desert plants, and an 8500 volume
library is available for study.

to interact with the public in activities such as garden tours,

exhibits, greenhouse facilities, and trash management.
Could also be assigned garden responsibilities. A field
trip to another facility will be included in the

The Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark is
nestled in the Stillwater River Valley about 5 miles north of
downtown Dayton. This facility offers visitors a variety
of activities including public programs for children and adults
in the Wegerzyn Horticultural Center, biking along the River
Corridor Bikeway, hiking an the Marie Aull Nature Trail, and a
multi-sensory horticultural experience in the Wegerzyn
Gardens. The Gardens include several period and theme
gardens including the Federal, English, Victorian, Rose, and
Children's Discovery, Plus a boardwalk through a wetwoods.
