An excellent opportunity for
someone interested in specializing in plant propagation.
Intern will work directly with our plant propagator and
conservatory staff to gain hands-on experience in propagation
techniques and conservatory operations. Work Monday to

Working in Brooklyn Botanic
Garden's Cranford Rose Garden will provide a unique focus on the
care of roses. Intern will be working with our Rosarian
pruning, fertilizing, watering and weeding; learning the skills
involved in this specialized field. Work Monday to Friday
from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Position requires a strong
interest in horticulture and a willingness to d physical work, a

Botanic Education - Junior Botanist Summer Adventures

The intern will work with the
Project Green Reach staff as well as be responsible for a small
group of Junior Botanists who plant a garden and engage in other
botanical pursuits. A three-day sleep away camp is also
part of the activities. Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00am to
4:00 pm, with one Saturday for graduation. Qualifications:
College student of sophomore standing with a strong interest in
science and children. A background in science and working

Internship: Horticultural Education/Children's Garden
Lead and teach a group of 12 to
16 children (ages 7 to 17) while also supervising a junior
instructor about hands-on gardening in the oldest known
children's garden program of its kind. The Intern also
will help maintain the Children's Garden area. Hours:
Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 3:30 pm. Qualifications; High
School student, ages 15-18 (14 for Children's Garden program
graduates). Submit a completed Children's Garden Junior

collect wetland and aquatic plants in the New York Metro
area. Also plant specimen identification and
processing. Opportunity to develop a research project
around this work. Hours: Three days per week.
Qualifications: At least one college-level botany course
satisfactorily completed or equivalent experience. Ability
to work outdoors in all conditions. Ability to spend up to
three consecutive days in the field. Must be able to
swim. Must possess a valid driver's license. Plant
identification skills and familiarity with local flora

The estate gardener intern will
assist in the maintenance of the horticultural collections at
the Hay Honey Farm. Position includes work in pruning,
mowing, irrigation, weeding, and the installation of new
gardens. Intern must be able to operate power equipment,
tractor, and mowers. Ability to apply pesticides a
plus. Intern will report directly to the Estate Managers
for direction, but will be expected to take individual
responsibilities in key areas.

The woodland intern will
implement all aspects of a comprehensive restoration
project. Intern will identify desirable hardwood species;
remove non-native invasive species; apply herbicides where
appropriate; begin replanting program; and develop effective
deer protection plan. Intern must be proficient in the use
of a chain saw, brush cutter, and tractor. Intern will
report directly to the Estate Managers for direction, but will

Montgomery Place is an intact,
historic estate (c. 1800) of great horticultural and
architectural interest. Open to the public since 1986, its
435 acres are located in the Great Estate National Historic
District along the Hudson River, 100 miles north of New York
City. It is composed of a mid-19th-century picturesque
landscape, as well as a series of special interest gardens
dating from 1920-1945, extensive woodlands, and an orchard.

Interns are immersed in the
hands-on operation of the landscape with its diverse plant
collection. Scope of work includes insight into landscape
preservation, planting and maintenance of extensive display
gardens and container plantings, record keeping, pruning, plant
propagation, and integrated pest management. Of special
interest would be the recording of historic plants, research,
and re-creation of an historic vegetable garden.
Applicants should enjoy interacting with the public.
Practical garden skills paired with a strong interest in gaining
a deeper understanding of working on an historic site are
valued. Computer skills, photography, drafting, and
drawing are a plus. Field trips will be made during the
summer months to other historic sites and gardens of

Planting fields is a 409-acre
public garden located on the north shore of Long Island.
This former estate features specimen trees, ornamental shrubs,
and herbaceous plantings, one half an acre of greenhouses,
historic buildings and a 65-room Tudor revival mansion.

Responsibilities include
maintaining computerized and written plant records for the
arboretum's vast collection of woody plants; producing plant
labels, updating plant inventories; formulating plant orders;
and maintaining a small propagation nursery of unusual trees and
shrubs. Field or class experience in woody plant
identification and Microsoft Access preferred.

Responsibilities include
developing and coordinating education course program and
interpretive programs; assisting with special events and other
areas of education. Gain experience with scheduling
classes, formulating course brochures, exhibits, signage,
etc. Computer skills in Microsoft Office are preferred.

Grounds Maintenance
Grounds maintenance inters will
receive practical hands-on experience in all phases of
maintenance, landscape design, and enhancement of a diverse
collection of horticultural plant collections within the
409-acre arboretum. Planting Fields is an intact historic
site designed by the Olmstead brothers as well as an active
arboretum with many unusual greenhouse and hardy
collections. General duties will include planting,
pruning, watering, weeding, mulching, and garden renovation.

Herbaceous Plant
Responsibilities include
maintaining container plantings, hanging baskets and various
herbaceous plantings throughout the grounds. The use of
new and unusual plant varieties is encouraged. Other
duties include caring for the gardens around Coe Hall, a 65-room
Tudor Revival-style mansion on the grounds.
