Status of the Soybean Stem Borer, Dectes texanus, in North America --
Summary of Poster Presented at ESA North
Central Meeting in

We need your help determining the breadth of the infestation. We have very incomplete records of statewide occurrence. The map above shows the counties which have reported infestations of this pest in soybeans since 1985. If you happen to find it in a county that is not shaded on the map I would appreciate either receiving a sample of the infested plants along with a description of where they were found or directions to the field so that I could check out the infestation. Send samples to Phil Sloderbeck, K-State Southwest Research - Extension Center, 4500 East Mary Street, Garden City, Kansas 67846 or send an e-mail message with the location of the field to psloderb@oznet.ksu.edu
The image below shows typical damage caused by the soybean stem borer.

If you want to do some fall sampling for this pest in your county, we would appreciate hearing from you about what you are finding. The following is a suggested sampling procedure. Earliest maturing fields may have the heaviest infestations. In each field, break off 10 plants at or below ground level. Plants should be chosen two at a time from 5 different locations within each field you examine. Split the stalks with a pocket knife, looking for tunneling that starts several nodes above ground, generally where a leaf was attached. Most likely the legless, yellowish colored larvae will be down near the soil level by now. These larvae developed from an egg that was laid on a mid-canopy petiole by an adult beetle in mid-summer. The larvae entered the petiole and worked its way down the leaf petiole into the main stem, where it continued tunneling down to ground level. Record the date of sampling, whether the field was infested, the numbers of plants sampled and the percent of plants that held stem borer larvae or signs of tunnels. Also record the percent of plants that are girdled and have lodged (broken off). Larvae tend to plug the tunnel above them after they girdle a plant. Therefore, if you see lodged plants with no obvious cause, split the stems and stem bases and see if signs of tunneling and a stem borer larva can be found. Stem bases can also be split to get an idea of the infestation that had been present if the field has already been harvested. Varietal information also would be useful if it is available. Return the information to psloderb@oznet.ksu.edu or sschroll@oz.oznet.ksu.edu and you will help us develop a better understanding of the distribution and seasonal abundance of this pest in Kansas soybeans.
