What is Carbon?

Exactly what is carbon, and why does it play such an important role in our economy and environment? First of all, carbon is an integral part of almost everything in our daily lives. This link takes you to a brief description of the various forms carbon takes in our lives, and how soil organic carbon relates to carbon in the atmosphere, the oceans, and deep geological formations.

What is the Carbon Cycle?

For billions of years, there has been a fixed amount of carbon on Earth. If the amount of carbon in one part of the Earth is increasing, the amount of carbon in some other part of the Earth must be decreasing. All carbon is interconnected, and flows from one form to another in what is called the carbon cycle. To find out how carbon flows in the Earth’s ecosystem, follow this link.
