Summary of Departmental Safety Report

Summary of Departmental Safety Report
Objectives And Accomplishments for 2003

K-State Research and Extension
College of Agriculture

K-State Research and Extension and the College of Agriculture have established departmental safety committees for the purposes of:
  • soliciting input from employees and students,

  • establishing local safety objectives,

  • coordinating the achievement of those objectives.

  • making our concern for safety visible to every employee and student in our organization,

  • making safety an integral part of our everyday work, and

  • helping coordinate the reporting and investigation of all incidents and injuries.

2003 was the first full year of operation for our safety committees. Most committees far exceeded expectations. Here are a few noteworthy accomplishments:

  • 1,678 employees and students participated in safety training. Topics included first aid/CPR, defensive driving, ergonomics, back injury prevention, pesticide safety, chemical safety, hearing and eye protection.

  • 706 safety audits were conducted in labs, greenhouses, farms, and shops in order to eliminate hazards and to prepare for inspections by state and federal agencies.

  • 40% more employees participated in annual respirator fit tests than in previous years

  • 27% more employees participated in annual occupational medical surveillance than in previous years

  • 24 fume hoods were repaired in labs

  • Many office employees benefited from improvements in ergonomics and indoor air quality.

  • A very large quantity of old chemicals was cleaned out and disposed from labs, farms, and pesticide storage areas

Listed below are brief summaries of the objectives and accomplishments for each committee.  Feel free to browse the entire report, or use the hyperlink menu below to go directly to an individual location.
