| Harvest scene late 1800s |
 |
This is a typical harvest scene in the late 1800s. The
wheat was cut and bound together in shocks. The shocks were stacked into
piles to be picked up later and hauled to the thresher. |
 |
A wagon full of wheat shocks was driven close to the
stationary thresher to be dumped into it. The grain was dumped on the
ground and shoveled into sacks. There are sacks full of wheat on the
right. The tractor on the left provided power to operate the thresher.
If you look hard, you can see a belt from the tractor is attached to the
thresher and that turning belt provided the power. |
 |
As farm mechanization increased, farmers were able to
harvest wheat faster than when they harvested by hand. The tractor is
providing power for the combine. |
