Welcome to the Kansas Park and Facilities Viewer and Database

The Kansas Recreation and Park Association has received a grant from the Sunflower Foundation to update this database and publish it for public use this Summer. To complete that task we need your help in reviewing the parks and related recreation facilities and notifying us of errors and omissions.....not only of your parks but of the parks and facilities in small towns (without rec staff) in your county. As of this year each county must be in compliance with a full inventory for any agency in the county to be eligible for LWCF and RTF funds.

What you need to do by April 1:

1.  Visit the Instructions Link    Below is a general overview but a detailed set of illustrated instructions is available at this link.

Check with other park and recreation professionals in your community....so that only designated people complete the review.

2. Go to the park and facilities viewer to complete your review.     http://maps.kansasgis.org/kdwp/public/index.cfm

3. Select the find a park tab; select your community in the search function. Review each park in your community one at a time. (See item # 4 before proceeding) After you've reviewed parks, select the find a trails tab and repeat a similar review.

You are looking for errors and omissions such as incorrect names or street addresses, incorrect locations, missing parks or related facilities. Check to see if the ballfields are correctly classified (several 4 plexes were listed when each field should be listed as part of a complex) or that restrooms are correctly classified (vault or flush)

New parks and facilities added since 2003 may not have been included so be sure to look for these

Elementary schools are listed in the database as parklike properties because they host playgrounds, hardcourt surfaces and playfields that are publicly available. A red dot symbol indicates the location of a school (from another database). If a green school/park symbol and label with the school name appears nearby we already have the school= s data, but if not, please add it as a new school park, marking the location of the outdoor facilities and explaining each on the update form. Check the jr. high and high schools as well. We prefer to call these USD ___ Sports complexes with football fields, tracks and courts.

We want only outdoor areas and facilities, not rec centers or school buildings. The existing facilities in the database should be a guide.

Do not worry about categories (we=ll add that, just describe the park and/or facility in some detail on the update form so we can categorize each correctly).

To make corrections print off the map of the park from the website (aerial photo with existing symbology) and draw a point on the map where the park or facility needs to go. Use a letter as a key code on the update form (e.g. use a letter A, to represent Smith Park softball field, lighted, constructed in 2006)

Contact your city/county GIS department. If they have your parks in a GIS layer, please include the contact name and info; or send me the shapefile. If your park boundaries are NOT included in a GIS layer, please draw each park= s boundary on the aerial photo so that we can make a layer.

4. Print off as many copies of the Park and facility update form or New Park Form as needed. Include one form with each park that needs updating. For parks that do not need updating, list them together on the List of Parks Needing NO Updates form.

5. Contact Dr. Sid Stevenson at any time if you need assistance. Email is the preferred contact (sstevens@ksu.edu) . Phone # is 785-532-1405.
